A man is being sought by Gardaí after a woman was knocked unconscious in what investigators have described as a serious and unprovoked assault in Cork city centre.
The attack took place on Oliver Plunkett Street on 23 November last year. CCTV footage shows a man walking towards a woman before suddenly lifting his elbow and striking her in the head as they pass each other. There appears to have been no prior interaction between the two.
The force of the blow left the woman unconscious on the street. She later required medical treatment and was found to have suffered a broken orbital bone to her right eye socket.
One of the victim’s friends is seen in the footage attempting to confront the suspect, who continues walking away from the scene with his hands in his pockets.
Garda Greg Freegrove, speaking on RTÉ’s Crimecall, described the incident as a “serious assault” and appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the man.

He is described as approximately 5ft 8in tall, of stocky build, with dark hair and a beard. He is believed to be in his late twenties to mid-thirties. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a distinctive green and black North Face jacket.

Gardaí are urging anyone who recognises the suspect or has information about the incident to contact them on 1800 40 50 60.
