Former Pakistan captain and ex-prime minister Imran Khan is set to be moved to hospital following growing concerns over his health.
Government minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said on X that, given Mr Khan’s condition, a decision had been taken to transfer him to hospital and constitute a medical board.
The announcement follows pressure from opposition lawmakers, who have launched a protest inside Parliament House calling for him to receive full medical attention.
Mr Khan, 73, has been in custody since August 2023 after being sentenced in multiple cases that he and his supporters say are politically motivated. His legal team has reported that he developed an eye infection and has lost most of the vision in his right eye. Government representatives have rejected claims of neglect.
Former Pakistan cricketers have publicly urged authorities to ensure he receives appropriate treatment. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis called for timely medical access, while Shahid Afridi described healthcare as a basic right.
Ramiz Raja, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Akhtar also expressed concern. Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja called for solidarity.
Mr Khan captained Pakistan to the 1992 Cricket World Cup title and later founded the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore. He served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
Further details are expected once the medical board has conducted its assessment.
