A man who was jailed for repeatedly attacking a woman in a random street assault in north-west London has died in prison, it has emerged.
Gulwali Stanekzay**, 22 at the time of the offence, assaulted Aisha Waris, 23, as she walked home alone in Harlesden in February 2023.
Stanekzay was sentenced to three years in prison after admitting the attack. Prison authorities have confirmed that he died at HMP Wandsworth on 17 January, aged 25.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is investigating the circumstances of his death.
The court heard that Ms Waris was walking along Minet Avenue at around 7.30pm on 26 February 2023 when Stanekzay deliberately rode his bicycle into her and began punching her repeatedly in the head and shoulders.
After riding away, he returned moments later and launched a second attack, forcing her to run towards a nearby house. As she begged him to stop, he assaulted her for a third time on the property.
Once inside, Ms Waris wiped blood from her nose and lip before being assisted by residents.
The attack was captured on a Ring doorbell camera belonging to neighbour Richard Jarman, who had come outside after hearing screams.
Footage played at Harrow Crown Court showed Ms Waris pleading for help and being pursued onto the property.
After she escaped inside, Stanekzay damaged a parked Toyota Prius and attacked the front door, smashing glass and the camera with a bike lock. The court was told he caused more than £3,400 worth of damage to the vehicle and additional damage to the property.
Ms Waris’s father, Abdullah Khan, later arrived at the scene and was also assaulted by Stanekzay before the attacker fled.
Stanekzay had arrived in the UK from Afghanistan as an unaccompanied minor in 2016 and had been homeless at the time of the offence. He had previously been convicted of assault and was in breach of a suspended sentence when the attack took place.
In May 2023, he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of criminal damage.
Ms Waris suffered a swollen nose, bruised lip and multiple injuries to her face, shoulders and chest.
Authorities have said further details about Stanekzay’s death will be released following the ombudsman’s investigation.
