Armed Police Respond to Lewisham High Street Incident Amid Hostage Fears

Armed police have been deployed to Lewisham High Street in south-east London following reports of a potential hostage situation. A shirtless man was seen brandishing a knife outside a window, prompting a significant emergency response.

Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade, are currently at the scene, with officers attempting to communicate with the individual. Authorities are working to determine whether anyone else is inside the building with the man.

Armed police are responding to an incident on Lewisham High Street involving a man reportedly armed and shouting from a building window.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were called to the incident at approximately 10:45 am on Monday, February 10. A section of Lewisham High Street remains closed between Lee High Road/Belmont Hill and A2211 Rennell Street as the situation unfolds.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that officers are actively engaging with the man while investigations continue. The public has been advised to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.

Images from the scene show emergency personnel stationed outside an HSBC bank near the location of the disturbance. Police have not yet confirmed whether the incident is linked to the bank or any surrounding properties.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the individual involved or the potential motives behind the incident. Updates are expected as the situation develops.
