Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture of the new season against Bournemouth was temporarily halted after an alleged racist comment was directed at Cherries forward Antoine Semenyo by a spectator in a wheelchair.

The incident occurred during the first half at Anfield, with Semenyo alerting referee Anthony Taylor to the alleged abuse. Taylor immediately paused the match and walked over to speak with both benches.

Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury confirmed on air that the stoppage related to an alleged racist remark, reportedly from a supporter seated in the disabled section.

Following short discussions, the game resumed, with Semenyo remaining on the pitch. Minutes later, Liverpool’s new signing Hugo Ekitike scored to give the home side the lead.

The match had started with an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who both died in a car crash in Spain earlier this month. Players, officials, and fans observed a moment of respect before kick-off.

An investigation into the incident is expected, with the Football Association, Liverpool, and police likely to review the matter.
