Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi has been charged with attempted murder after four prison officers were injured in an alleged attack at HMP Frankland, a maximum-security prison in County Durham, earlier this year.
Abedi, 28, faces three counts of attempted murder and one count of unauthorised possession of a knife or offensive weapon following the incident in April. Counter Terrorism Policing North East confirmed it carried out a joint investigation with Durham Constabulary and the prison service.
The convicted terrorist remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September.
Abedi is currently serving a minimum term of 55 years for his role in helping his brother, suicide bomber Salman Abedi, plan the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. The bombing killed 22 people and injured more than 1,000 others at the end of an Ariana Grande concert.
HMP Frankland houses some of the UK’s most dangerous inmates, and the attack is understood to have prompted a full security review. No further details about the prison officers’ conditions have been released.
