Police have arrested several demonstrators after anti-migrant protests erupted near the Britannia International Hotel in Canary Wharf, east London.
The protest, which took place on Saturday, saw activists from the group calling itself the Pink Ladies joined by masked demonstrators who lit smoke flares and obstructed traffic. The Blue Bridge on the Isle of Dogs was blocked before the group marched towards the Britannia International Hotel, which is being used to house asylum seekers.
As the protest escalated, officers moved in and made arrests at the scene. Witnesses reported disruption in the financial district, with traffic brought to a standstill during the demonstration.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that arrests were made for public order offences, though the number detained has not yet been specified. The protest marks the latest in a series of demonstrations targeting hotels and facilities used for asylum accommodation across the UK.
