US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin faced a flurry of shouted questions from reporters as they paused briefly for photographs during their red carpet arrival at Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska.

Standing on a raised platform for the press, the two leaders were asked directly about the war in Ukraine. One journalist called out: “President Putin, will you agree to a ceasefire?” Another asked Mr Trump: “What is your message to President Putin?”

Further questions followed, including whether Russia had underestimated Ukraine and whether President Putin would “stop killing civilians”.

Neither leader responded to the questions, and moments later they walked away from the platform.

In a symbolic gesture, the two leaders are travelling together in the same vehicle to their closed-door talks their first face-to-face meeting in over six years. The meeting will begin with a private one-on-one session with translators before expanding to a working lunch with senior officials.
