US President Donald Trump has become the subject of viral speculation on X (formerly Twitter) after the phrase “Trump is dead” began trending online, prompting rumours about his health and whereabouts.
The trend emerged following an interview by Vice President JD Vance with USA Today on 27 August. Asked whether he was prepared to assume office if “a terrible tragedy” were to occur, Vance stressed that Trump, 79, remained “fit and energetic” but acknowledged that unforeseen events could not be ruled out. His comments appear to have sparked online debate about the president’s age and health.
Adding to the speculation was the absence of public events on Trump’s schedule for 30 and 31 August, reported by Roll Call. Some users highlighted that the president had not been seen in more than 24 hours, although he has remained active on Truth Social, his social media platform.
Concerns about Trump’s health have circulated for months, particularly after repeated sightings of bruising on his hand. The White House confirmed in July that Trump suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, a vein condition that causes leg swelling, but did not attribute the hand bruising to any specific illness. Reports have suggested he sometimes covers the marks with makeup.
Despite this, there has been no official confirmation of any health emergency. Trump had originally planned to spend the final two weeks of August at his Bedminster resort in New Jersey but chose to remain at the White House instead. His absence from the public eye coincides with the upcoming Labor Day weekend on 1 September.
The rumours remain unverified, with no credible evidence supporting claims that the president’s health has suddenly deteriorated. However, the combination of Vance’s remarks, visible signs of ill health in recent months, and a lack of public appearances has kept the speculation alive.
