Britain First supporters marched through Manchester city centre today as police launched a major security operation and counter protesters gathered nearby.
Hundreds of officers deployed across the city as the far-right group assembled on Store Street beneath Piccadilly station from around midday before marching towards St Peter Square for a rally.
Police increased their presence following violence at a previous Britain First march in February, where clashes with counter protesters led to 11 arrests and prompted criticism of the police response.
A counter demonstration organised by anti-racism groups under the name Resist Britain First took place in Piccadilly Gardens, with reports of scuffles involving police.
Authorities warned visitors to expect disruption across the city centre, with tram services later suspended after protesters blocked tracks.
Officers enforced additional powers throughout the day, including a Section 34 dispersal order covering the city centre and a Section 60 order allowing enhanced stop and search measures and the removal of face coverings.
The march passed through key parts of the city, including areas previously affected by unrest, as police sought to prevent a repeat of earlier violence.
