An amateur boxer has been jailed after attacking his mother in a violent incident that left her with a bleed on the brain.
Usman Sheikh, 26, is serving an extended sentence of 83 months after admitting a series of offences following the attack at his mother’s home in Halifax on August 20 last year.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Sheikh, who had a history of drug addiction, became enraged after failing to find drugs he believed were at the property. Prosecutors said he blamed his mother and began throwing furniture and damaging items in the house.
During the incident, he threatened to kill her before putting his hands around her neck and strangling her, restricting her breathing. He then punched her in the face, causing a bleed on her brain.
The court was told that one of Sheikh’s Cane Corso dogs bit his mother multiple times while he failed to intervene. She managed to flee the property and later contacted family members, who alerted police.
Sheikh was arrested shortly afterwards in what was described as an agitated state. His mother was taken to hospital for treatment.
In a statement read to the court, she said she had tried for years to support her son but had lived in fear due to his behaviour and repeated demands for money to fund his drug use.
Sheikh admitted grievous bodily harm with intent, intentional strangulation, making threats to kill, being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, and criminal damage.
Sentencing him, Recorder Tony Watkin said Sheikh posed a significant risk to the public and that a standard sentence would not be sufficient.
The court heard that at the time of the attack Sheikh was suffering from a substance-induced psychosis after consuming large amounts of cocaine, alcohol and diazepam.
He was sentenced to 59 months in prison with an additional two years on licence.
