The two people killed in the Bristol house explosion have been named locally as Joanne Shaw and her former partner Ryan Kelly.
Avon and Somerset Police have already said they believe the woman who died was 35-year-old Jo Shaw, who was living at the house on Sterncourt Road in Frenchay, and that the man who died was her former partner, Ryan Kelly, 41.
Police say they received a call at 6.17am on Sunday from someone inside the property reporting a domestic-related incident and saying a man known to them had forced entry. Officers were dispatched while the caller remained on the line.
At about 6.30am, police were told the man was believed to be in possession of an explosive device. Around two minutes later, an explosion took place at the house.
Superintendent Matt Ebbs said Jo’s death has been officially recorded as a homicide and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.
Neighbours have now said Joanne had moved to the property, which they said belonged to her parents, after splitting from Kelly.
One neighbour, Stuart Blanchard, said: “It wasn’t Jo’s house, it was her parents’, she just lived there. She had split up with him, and I think she moved there to escape from him.”
He said he heard shouting before the blast while he was having breakfast.
“I’d heard the shouting before while having breakfast, something like ‘get out, get out’, but there’s something every week in this area, so I didn’t go out,” he said.
“Then there was a bang, it shook my front door.”
Blanchard said he initially believed it had been a gas explosion.
He added: “I’ve heard it was a hand grenade. The police were here in seconds. They were called before the explosion.”
He also said a friend had told him officers were giving Jo CPR before explosive ordnance specialists arrived.
The police have not publicly confirmed the exact type of device used, but they have said they believe the explosion was deliberate and that analysis work is still under way.
Three other people were treated for minor injuries and have since been discharged from hospital.
Police have also said the case is not being treated as terrorism-related and that there is no wider threat to the public.
Kelly had previous convictions linked to a drug operation, but police have not connected that earlier criminal history to the fatal explosion in their formal statements.
Enquiries remain ongoing at the property and officers say the investigation will continue for several days.
