Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge, with the club confirming his departure with immediate effect.
The decision follows a post-season review conducted by owners Fenway Sports Group after Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and failed to win a trophy during the 2025/26 campaign.
Slot had previously guided the club to the Premier League title in his first season after joining in June 2024, also reaching the Carabao Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League.
However, the team recorded a drop in performance during his second season, finishing with 60 points, 24 fewer than the previous campaign, and suffering 19 defeats across all competitions.
In a statement, Liverpool said the process to appoint a successor is under way and described the decision as a difficult one, acknowledging Slot’s contribution, including delivering the club’s 20th league title.
The club said the change was made based on the team’s trajectory and the need for a different approach moving forward.
Former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Slot. He recently guided Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish and European qualification following an extended unbeaten run.
Iraola has also attracted interest from other clubs, including Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen, with reports indicating he is open to remaining in the Premier League.
Slot leaves the club with one year remaining on his contract.
