A man has been sentenced to an extended 18-and-a-half-year term after being found guilty of attempted rape, strangulation and assault following an attack in a Bradford park.
Khairul Amin, 36, of Moor View Drive, was convicted of attempt rape, intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on May 1.
The court heard that the victim, a woman in her 30s, contacted police at around 9pm on August 28 to report that she had been attacked, sexually assaulted and strangled by an unknown man. She suffered serious head injuries and required hospital treatment.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, she described the lasting impact of the attack, stating it had “ruined” her day-to-day life and that she continued to suffer regular flashbacks.
She added that she hoped the sentence would reflect the trauma and loss of confidence she had endured.
Amin must serve at least 14 and a half years in custody before being considered for parole, with the remainder of the sentence to be served on licence.
Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe of Bradford District Safeguarding Unit said the victim showed significant courage in reporting the incident promptly, allowing officers to carry out a rapid investigation.
Police confirmed that Amin was identified, arrested, charged and brought before the courts within a day. He was described in court as a dangerous individual.
Officers have urged victims of sexual offences to report incidents, stating specialist support is available throughout investigations and court proceedings.
