A man has been jailed for 45 months after defrauding a vulnerable victim of approximately £80,000 in a case involving deception and impersonation.
Isa Janjua, 21, of Murray Road in Rugby, was convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on April 30.
The offence took place in November 2024, when the victim was contacted by someone posing as a police officer investigating financial fraud. Believing the call to be genuine, the victim provided banking details, allowing large sums of money to be transferred.
The court heard that Janjua then took the victim to a watch shop and made her purchase high-value items, further increasing the financial loss.
Detective Constable Callum Wallace of Kirklees District CID said the offender had deliberately targeted a vulnerable individual and exploited her trust.
He said: “Janjua preyed on an elderly and vulnerable woman, gained her trust, and then abused that trust in the extreme to defraud her for what was a very significant sum of money.”
Police have reiterated warnings to the public, stating officers will never ask for personal or banking details over the phone during unsolicited calls.
They are urging anyone who receives such calls to hang up immediately and seek advice through official channels.
