Two people have died after an explosion at a house in Bristol, with police declaring a major incident and treating the cause as suspicious.
Avon and Somerset Police said emergency services were called to a residential address on Sterncourt Road in Frenchay at about 6.30am.
Two adults were found dead at the property and their families have been informed.
A cordon remains in place while emergency services continue to respond, with residents living nearby evacuated to a temporary rest centre as a precaution.
Police said they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but enquiries remain at an early stage.
The force stressed that, despite the recent change to the UK threat level, the explosion is not being treated as a suspected terrorist incident.
Officers are also carrying out enquiries at a linked property in Speedwell.
Police said there is not believed to be any significant damage to surrounding homes, although a major emergency response remains in place.
Residents reported hearing a loud bang at around 6.30am, while smoke was seen rising from one of the homes. A white forensic tent was also put up at the scene, with bomb disposal officers attending as part of the response.
Around 70 neighbours were reportedly moved to a nearby temporary rest centre after the blast.
In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “The cause of the incident is being treated as suspicious, and a major incident has been declared.”
The force has urged the public not to speculate and to continue avoiding the area while emergency services carry out their work.
