A former University of Surrey student has been charged with attempted murder after a security guard was seriously injured in an alleged crossbow attack on campus.
Almunthir Daqamah, 21, a Saudi national, was arrested after the incident at Manor Park Student Village on the university’s Guildford campus shortly before 10am on Tuesday.
The victim, a man in his 50s who worked as a member of the campus safety team, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Surrey Police later said he was in a stable condition.
Daqamah has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article and possession of Class B drugs.
Police said he had been remanded in custody and was due to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court.
Video from the scene showed a man in handcuffs being escorted through the student accommodation area by police officers. He was dressed in black and had his hood up.
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said officers were working to establish the full circumstances of what happened and confirmed police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
He said there was nothing to suggest the case was terror-related and urged people not to speculate online while the investigation continues.
A University of Surrey spokesperson said the incident happened at about 9.50am on the Manor Park campus and confirmed that a member of its campus safety team had been seriously injured and was receiving medical care.
The university said it was giving Surrey Police its full support as the investigation continues.
