Four men have now been jailed over the sexual abuse of a teenage girl in Kirklees between 1994 and 2000, following proceedings at Leeds Crown Court.

Zahid Hussain, 48, Mohammed Chhibda, 49, Basharat Wali, 46, and Jagtar Sahota, 65, were all convicted in connection with offences against the same victim.

On Thursday 4 June, Hussain, from Dewsbury, was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for six counts of indecent assault.

Chhibda, also from Dewsbury, was sentenced to 11 years for two counts of indecent assault.

Wali, from Dewsbury, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for two counts of indecent assault.

The court heard Hussain and Chhibda were convicted after a trial in April, while Wali had admitted his offences at an earlier hearing.

A fourth man, Jagtar Sahota, from Leeds, had already been sentenced on 29 April to 21 years in prison for 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of actual bodily harm against the same victim. His offences took place between 1997 and 2000.

The offences involving Hussain, Chhibda and Wali were committed between 1994 and 1997, when the victim was a teenager.

In a statement read to the court, the survivor said she had been “so young, so vulnerable” when the abuse began and said the men knew exactly what they were doing.

She said: “They didn’t care that I was a child. They didn’t care that I didn’t understand. They used me, abused me then discarded me.

“They took pieces of my soul, pieces of my body, pieces of me that I will never get back. They made sure I would never be the same again.”

She added that the impact of the abuse had continued throughout her life, with certain places and sounds still triggering memories and fear.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Stevens of Kirklees Police said the survivor had shown real courage in reporting the offences and supporting the investigation through to conviction and sentencing.

Julia McSorley, specialist prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service’s Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, said the men had deliberately targeted the victim because she was younger and vulnerable.

She said the sentences represented an important measure of accountability for offences that had caused profound and lasting harm.
