An Iranian drone strike on Kuwait International Airport killed one person and injured more than 60 others, according to Kuwaiti officials, in the latest escalation between Tehran and Washington.
Kuwait said the attack damaged Terminal 1 and nearby diplomatic missions. Flights were temporarily diverted before some operations resumed from Terminal 4 after safety checks.
India later identified the person killed as an Indian national and said several other Indian citizens were injured. New Delhi condemned the attack and called on all sides to stop further strikes.
Kuwait’s defence ministry described the incident as “criminal Iranian aggression”. Its foreign ministry ordered two Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 24 hours and summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the strike, saying it was retaliation for US action against an Iranian-linked oil tanker and for strikes on Qeshm Island. Tehran also said it had targeted US bases and helicopters in a Gulf country.
The United States said its forces had carried out strikes on Qeshm Island in what it described as self-defence, targeting an Iranian military ground control station. US Central Command also said it intercepted Iranian threats in the Gulf, including drones aimed at civilian shipping.
CENTCOM said two Iranian missiles aimed at Kuwait fell short or broke apart before impact, and three missiles aimed at Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini air defences.
The exchange has added pressure to already stalled ceasefire talks between the US and Iran. Reuters reported that the latest hostilities threatened a fragile ceasefire that has been under strain for weeks.
