AJK Government Approves Price Reductions for Electricity and Flour Following Protests

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has taken decisive action to quell unrest in the valley by approving substantial reductions in the prices of electricity and flour, following a series of violent protests. These changes come as a direct response to the demands raised by the Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been at the forefront of advocating for economic relief in the region.

A recent notification issued in Rawalakot detailed the new pricing structure, which includes a decrease of Rs 1100 per 40 kg bag of wheat flour, bringing the price down from Rs 3100 to Rs 2000. This reduction is expected to significantly ease the financial burden on local households.

In addition to flour, the AJK government has also revised electricity tariffs to make power more affordable for its residents. Under the new tariff scheme, domestic consumers using up to 100 units of electricity will now pay only Rs 3 per unit. Those consuming between 101 and 300 units will be charged Rs 5 per unit, while consumption above 300 units will cost Rs 6 per unit. Industrial consumers will see rates of Rs 10 per unit up to 300 units, with a higher rate of Rs 15 per unit for usage beyond that threshold.

These announcements were made during a press conference by Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir, Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq, who emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the public’s concerns without suppressing peaceful protests. He also acknowledged the recent telephonic assurance from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding swift action to resolve the flour crisis within 24 hours.

The financial adjustments are part of a broader effort by the AJK government, supported by a significant funding allocation of Rs 23 billion from PM Shehbaz Sharif, to tackle the issues that have led to public unrest. This funding aims to enhance the region’s socio-economic stability by resolving ongoing problems faced by the people of AJK.

The government’s response comes after recent protests led to the unfortunate death of a police sub-inspector and injuries to over a hundred officers, highlighting the intense situation in the region. The protests had seen widespread disruption, with damage to vehicles, and closures affecting markets, trade centers, offices, schools, and restaurants across AJK.

As the new prices and financial support are implemented, the AJK government hopes to restore peace and public confidence, demonstrating a responsive and caring administration.
