In a thrilling qualifying session at the Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell secured Mercedes’ first pole position of the season, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Both drivers set identical lap times, but Russell will start the race from the front due to setting his time first.

Russell expressed his excitement and optimism after the session, stating, “Amazing. It feels so good. So much hard work at the factory has gone into this and we said it in Monaco, we hope this is the start of something for our season, and I think it is. I’ve missed this feeling. Excited for tomorrow. First step done, but now obviously we’ve got our eyes on that win.”

When asked about his chances against Verstappen for the win, Russell confidently replied, “Why not? Of course. Let’s go for it. The car has been feeling amazing since we brought some upgrades to Monaco, we have really been in that fight now. So we’re going for it tomorrow.”

Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s teammate, managed only seventh place, while McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked out the second row, showcasing a strong performance from the team.

Ferrari faced a disappointing session, failing to get either car into the top 10. Charles Leclerc, who won the previous race in Monaco, qualified 11th, while his teammate Carlos Sainz secured the 12th spot.

Sergio Perez of Red Bull continued to struggle, being knocked out in the first session for the second consecutive race. The last time Perez was in the top 10 on the grid was three races ago in Miami.

The competitive edge displayed by Russell and the performance improvements from Mercedes hint at an exciting race ahead. With Russell aiming for his first win of the season and Verstappen looking to maintain his dominance, the Canadian Grand Prix promises intense action.
