The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked Facebook across the country, impacting over 44 million users. The blockage, which has now lasted for two days, follows the previous block on Twitter/X. This move has sparked outrage among social media users who rely on these platforms for communication, news, and entertainment.

Facebook and Instagram services have been disrupted in Pakistan for two days, in addition to the existing block on Twitter/X. PTA yet to provide reasons or timeline for lifting the ban. #FacebookBan #Pakistan pic.twitter.com/Gi5f3zrPFR

A notice from NAYAtel Technical Assistance Center confirmed the disruption, stating that the company is awaiting a reply from PTA regarding the reasons for the blockage and when the ban might be lifted. The notice reads:

“Dear Customer, Facebook and Instagram services are disrupted with all service providers across the country for the last two days. This blockage is in addition to already blocked Twitter/X. We have requested and are waiting for a reply from PTA for reasons for this blockage and when this ban will be lifted. Kind Regards, Manager NAYAtel Technical Assistance Center.”

Sources indicate that the government’s decision to block Facebook was due to national security concerns and the spread of misinformation. The block has led many users to turn to other platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp to express their frustration and concerns.

PTA has not yet released an official statement, but insiders suggest the ban is part of broader efforts to limit online dissent and political activities. As the situation unfolds, users in Pakistan are left wondering when they will regain access to Facebook and what the future holds for social media in the country.

The blocking of Facebook and other social media platforms highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and its citizens regarding freedom of speech and access to information. The sudden and extended disruption of these services is likely to have significant impacts on businesses, communication, and the daily lives of millions of Pakistanis.
