Dr. Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old psychiatrist originally from Hofuf, Saudi Arabia, has been identified as the suspect in the devastating Magdeburg Christmas market car attack that killed at least 11 people, including a toddler, and injured nearly 70 others. The incident occurred at 7:04 pm local time when a dark BMW drove approximately 400 metres through a densely packed crowd, causing widespread panic and destruction.

Reports identify Dr. Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, a Saudi-born psychiatrist and activist, as the Magdeburg attack suspect.

German authorities arrested the suspect at the scene. Video footage of the arrest shows armed police surrounding the vehicle, shouting at the bearded man to exit while pointing weapons at him. Officers also worked to disperse onlookers and secure the area. A suspected explosive device was found in the vehicle, further heightening concerns.

Dr. Taleb, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist working at a government hospital in Saxony-Anhalt, has been living in Germany since 2006 after seeking asylum. Known for his activism, he founded the website wearesaudis.net to assist asylum seekers and refugees, particularly those fleeing Islamic persecution. His work included aiding individuals from Saudi Arabia and other countries, including Western nations like Canada.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. State officials, including Saxony-Anhalt’s Reiner Haselhoff, confirmed the suspect’s identity and his employment in the region. Police have stated that no additional suspects are being sought, suggesting that Dr. Taleb acted alone.

Emergency services quickly set up treatment tents to care for the injured, with at least 15 people reported to have suffered severe injuries. Graphic footage captured moments of chaos as the car tore through the market, leaving dozens of people lying injured while others fled for safety. Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, with children crying and small groups attempting to assist the wounded.

The Magdeburg Christmas market, a popular seasonal event, has been closed indefinitely as investigations continue. Authorities are treating the incident as a deliberate attack but have not confirmed any specific motivations.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, describing the event as a tragic and horrifying attack. Saxony PM Michael Kretschmer echoed these sentiments, noting the devastating impact on the community.

The suspect’s background as an activist and his connection to asylum efforts have raised questions about the potential motivations behind the attack. Dr. Taleb’s work helping refugees and his reported opposition to oppressive regimes add complexity to an already tragic and shocking case.

As investigations proceed, security measures are expected to be tightened at public gatherings across Germany.
