A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck close to Afghanistan on Sunday evening, with tremors widely felt in neighbouring countries including Pakistan, India, and Tajikistan.
The epicentre was recorded 23 kilometres from Afghanistan at around 20:17 local time, according to seismic monitoring agencies. Residents in Kabul and Islamabad reported strong jolts, though no casualties or significant structural damage have yet been reported.
Authorities in the affected countries are monitoring the situation and assessing the potential impact on vulnerable rural and mountainous regions, where earthquake damage is often more severe.
Earthquakes are relatively common in this region due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The area has experienced several deadly quakes in recent decades, raising concern about preparedness and safety measures.
