A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province on 10 August 2025 at 7:53pm local time, according to the country’s disaster ministry, AFAD. The tremor was also reported in Manisa, İzmir, Uşak, and Bursa.
AFAD confirmed that seven aftershocks exceeding magnitude 3.0 followed the main quake. Field surveys are ongoing, with provincial directorates from Çanakkale, İzmir, Afyonkarahisar, Uşak, Bursa, Sakarya, Kütahya, Bilecik, Manisa, and Kocaeli dispatching personnel and vehicles to support search and rescue operations.
The Turkish Disaster Response Plan has been activated, with representatives from all disaster groups meeting at the AFAD Disaster and Emergency Management Center. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the quake at magnitude 6.19 and a depth of 10km.
Local media reported that more than 10 buildings have collapsed in Serkan Sak, one of the worst-affected districts. Mayor Serkan Sak said the structures included single-storey, two-storey, and three-storey buildings. Communication with some villages remains unavailable due to mobile network disruptions.
Footage on social media showed residents attempting to rescue people trapped inside damaged buildings. Video also captured a collapsed house in Balıkesir’s Marmara region, though it remains unclear if anyone was inside at the time.
