Police Scotland have confirmed that a viral video showing a confrontation in Dundee depicts a 12-year-old girl attacking a Bulgarian resident with a knife and an axe, and not a migrant-related incident as some claimed online.
The video, filmed in the Lochee area last Saturday, showed the girl brandishing the weapons while shouting at 21-year-old Fatos Ali Dumana, who has lived legally in the UK since 2021. Dumana, who was walking to the shops with his wife at the time, was accused online of being a migrant, with high-profile figures Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson sharing the claims.
Police have dismissed these allegations, confirming Dumana committed no offence and that CCTV and witness statements supported his account. Officers later charged the 12-year-old girl with possession of offensive weapons.
Speaking from his home, Dumana said: “I never touched her. I have a baby now, I would never hurt someone. I was going to the shop and she was stopping me. The police saw the CCTV. Another person also told them she was attacking me and calling me a migrant. I am not an illegal migrant.”
The video shows the girl repeatedly producing a knife and axe, shouting “I’m 12” while another youth accused Dumana of “battering kids”. At one stage, Dumana can be heard saying “Show the knife,” which prompted the girl to reveal the weapons on camera.
Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell confirmed: “We are aware of misinformation being shared on social media in relation to an incident where a Bulgarian couple were approached by youths. A 12-year-old girl has been charged with being in possession of offensive weapons. Our enquiries are ongoing.”
The video has been viewed millions of times, with some online commentators wrongly portraying Dumana as a migrant. Former First Minister Humza Yousaf criticised the claims, calling them “false and dangerous”.
