Harvey Weinstein will face a third trial in New York later this year after a jury failed to reach a verdict in a rape case against him.
The 73-year-old disgraced film producer was accused of raping actress Jessica Mann, but a mistrial was declared in June after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision. Judge Curtis Farber has indicated he wants the new trial to take place before the end of 2025.
In the same June trial, Weinstein was found guilty of sexually assaulting former Project Runway production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and acquitted of assaulting Polish former model Kaja Sokola in the same year. Sentencing for the guilty verdict in Ms Haley’s case is scheduled for 30 September.
Weinstein, who denied all charges, claimed through his lawyers that the sexual encounters with his accusers were “transactional” and “consensual”, branding the women as opportunists.
The retrial follows the overturning of Weinstein’s 2020 conviction by New York’s highest court. That conviction had seen him sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and criminal sexual act charges.
Once one of Hollywood’s most influential figures, Weinstein co-founded Miramax and The Weinstein Company, producing films including Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction, and The Crying Game. His downfall was a catalyst for the global #MeToo movement.
