New footage has emerged showing the moments leading up to the fatal stabbing of ice cream seller Shazad Khan, known affectionately in his community as ‘Mr Smiley’, in Wembley, north-west London.
The 41-year-old father-of-one was attacked on Tuesday evening while on his usual route through Monks Park. Emergency services were called at around 18:15 BST, but despite efforts from neighbours and paramedics, Mr Khan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Footage shows Mr Khan in an argument with a man wearing grey jogging bottoms and a hoodie shortly before the stabbing. The confrontation escalated as raised voices could be heard, before Mr Khan turned his back on the man. He was then stabbed moments later.
Neighbours rushed to help, with witnesses describing how residents tried desperately to save his life until ambulance crews arrived. A local resident said: “We all know Shazad around here. People did their best, but we are all devastated.”
Tributes have poured in for Mr Khan, who grew up in Wembley and was described as a generous, cheerful figure. Known for giving free ice cream to children and families struggling financially, his kindness earned him the nickname ‘Mr Smiley’.
Close friends and neighbours described him as a devoted family man, caring for his late father during the Covid pandemic and spending time with his young daughter. One neighbour, Akram, said: “We have spoken to his mother, she’s in a terrible state. Shazad was humble, he loved football, he loved his family, and he was respected by the whole community.”
Forensics officers were seen searching a house on Monks Road on Thursday as the police investigation continues.
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed two arrests in connection with the incident. Both suspects remain in custody as enquiries continue.
