New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has accused Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu of having “lost the plot”, condemning the humanitarian crisis and military actions in Gaza.
Speaking to reporters, Luxon criticised the lack of humanitarian aid, forced displacement of civilians, and the ongoing military occupation, warning that Netanyahu had “gone way too far”.
“What we are seeing overnight, the attack on Gaza City, is utterly, utterly unacceptable,” he said, referring to a recent Israeli assault.
Earlier this week, Luxon said his government was considering recognising a Palestinian state, following Australia’s announcement that it would join the UK, France and Canada in formal recognition at a UN conference in September.
Luxon’s comments mark one of the strongest public criticisms of Netanyahu by a New Zealand leader in recent years and come amid mounting international pressure over Israel’s handling of the Gaza conflict.
