Wolves have rejected a second bid from Newcastle United for striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who scored twice in their EFL Cup win over West Ham on Tuesday.
The Magpies increased their offer to £55m after a £50m approach earlier in the week was turned down. Wolves remain determined to keep the Norway international, citing the limited time left in the transfer window to find a replacement and his importance to the club’s Premier League survival.
Strand Larsen, 25, completed a £23m permanent move from Celta Vigo this summer after scoring 14 league goals on loan last season. His two late goals secured Wolves a 3-2 victory against West Ham, underlining his value to Vitor Pereira’s side.
Newcastle are seeking attacking reinforcements as Alexander Isak continues his standoff with the club in an attempt to join Liverpool. The Sweden international has yet to feature this season, leaving Eddie Howe short of options.
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira admitted that “every player has a price” but made clear his desire to keep Strand Larsen. “If it’s my decision, of course he stays. He is a very important player,” Pereira said. He praised the striker’s professionalism, adding that Strand Larsen had shown no desire to force a move despite Newcastle’s interest.
Newcastle’s pursuit comes as they also weigh up alternatives, including Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, valued at £60m, and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, for whom two bids up to £40m have been rejected.
