Several people have been injured after a double-decker bus crashed into pedestrians in central London during rush hour.
Emergency services were called to Victoria Street, just metres from Victoria Railway Station, at around 8:20am on Thursday. The bus came to rest mounted partially on the pavement, across from the Victoria Palace Theatre.
Police said a number of pedestrians, bus passengers and the driver were taken to hospital. London’s Air Ambulance was deployed to the scene. No fatalities have been reported.
Images from the incident show large numbers of emergency personnel surrounding the vehicle, with the area cordoned off and traffic diverted.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police are responding to reports of a collision at around 08:20hrs on Thursday, 4 September in Victoria Street, SW1 involving a bus and a number of pedestrians. Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance are on scene. Several pedestrians and passengers on the bus are understood to be injured and are in the process of being transported to hospital. There are no reported fatalities. The driver of the bus has been taken to hospital.”
The London Fire Brigade confirmed it was called at 8:27am. “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus and members of the public on Victoria Street, SW1. London Ambulance Service are treating people on scene. Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters are in attendance. The cause of the collision is not known at this stage.”
Victoria Street remains closed with police cordons in place while investigations continue.
