UPDATE: The University of Massachusetts Boston has issued an all-clear after reports of gunfire prompted a large-scale police response on Thursday. Authorities now confirm there was no active shooter on campus.
Police and emergency services swarmed the University of Massachusetts Boston campus on Thursday following reports of a possible shooting, though authorities say no confirmation has been made of gunfire or a suspect.
The first alert warned of an incident at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Follow-up messages then warned students of a “public safety threat” at a residence hall in the East Building on the Dorchester campus.
Dozens of first responders arrived on the scene, with SWAT teams moving towards the dormitory. Students were urged to avoid the area, and many were seen running from the buildings.
Boston Police later confirmed that investigators had not verified any shots fired or an armed individual on campus. The scene remains under review, and both campus and city police continue to work together to determine what sparked the alerts.
UMass Boston has not released further details on whether classes or campus activities will be disrupted as the investigation continues.
