Luis Suárez is facing the prospect of a lengthy suspension after being accused of spitting at a Seattle Sounders coach in the aftermath of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup final defeat on Sunday night.
The incident unfolded after Miami’s 3-0 loss in Seattle. Television footage showed the 38-year-old forward angrily confronting a member of the Sounders’ backroom team. As tensions rose, Suárez’s teammate Oscar Ustari attempted to intervene before the striker appeared to spit at the coach, sparking a wider confrontation.
Players and staff from both sides became embroiled in a mass brawl on the pitch before officials and security separated the groups. Seattle head coach Brian Schmetzer commented afterwards: “I can take it as a compliment that their players were frustrated… but that shouldn’t be the story.”
The episode adds to Suárez’s long history of high-profile controversies. He was handed an eight-match ban in 2011 after racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, a 10-match ban in 2013 for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanović, and a four-month suspension in 2014 for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
Suárez later rebuilt his career with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, before joining Inter Miami to reunite with Lionel Messi.
