The FBI has confirmed the arrest of Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Authorities said Robinson surrendered after his father persuaded him to hand himself in. His arrest brings an end to a three-day manhunt that drew more than 7,000 public tips.
President Donald Trump had earlier told Fox & Friends that the suspect had been taken into custody, saying the breakthrough came because “someone very close” to him had turned him in.
CCTV footage previously released by investigators showed Robinson lying prone on the roof of the university’s Losee Center before fleeing with a backpack. A Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle fitted with a long-distance scope was later recovered from nearby woodland and has been identified as the weapon used in the attack.
Kirk, 30, was killed by a single gunshot while giving a talk at the university earlier this week. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that the state intends to pursue the death penalty if Robinson is convicted.
The FBI said Robinson is being held in federal custody. He is expected to face charges including murder and terrorism-related offences, with a formal indictment to follow.
