The search continues for the gunman who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, as witness footage shows the suspect on the rooftop of the Losee Center before and after the attack.
Videos captured in the moments following the shooting show a figure lying flat on the rooftop shortly after Kirk was struck in the neck while speaking at a campus rally. Another angle recorded from nearby appears to show an individual running across the same roof, as chaos unfolded and students fled for cover below.
Authorities confirmed that the fatal shot was fired from a long distance, approximately 200 yards away, with investigators saying the rooftop position was likely where the gunman opened fire.
Despite early reports of a suspect in custody, both the FBI and Utah Department of Public Safety now say no one has been detained. The person arrested immediately after the shooting has since been released, and police emphasise that the shooter remains at large.
Officials say they are working with limited CCTV evidence and are reviewing all available video material to identify the suspect. They have described the attack as “targeted” but have not released further details about the shooter, other than confirming he was dressed in black at the time.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has called the killing a “political assassination” and urged for restraint amid rising tensions. Security across the campus remains tight, with officers continuing a building-to-building search late into the night.
