Utah authorities have released new video of the suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as the manhunt entered its third day.
At a press conference, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason narrated footage showing a man lying prone on the roof of the Losee Center at Utah Valley University before running across it, climbing down, and fleeing onto a lawn with a backpack. Mason confirmed investigators tracked the suspect’s path to a wooded area, where they recovered a Mauser bolt-action .30-06 calibre rifle fitted with a long-distance scope.
Audio evidence suggested Kirk was killed by a single supersonic gunshot. Engravings were found on a spent casing and three chambered rounds. Investigators are still analysing markings that sources said appeared to reference transgender and anti-fascist ideology, but stressed these interpretations remain unverified.
What We Know So Far
- Appearance: The suspect wore a distinctive black T-shirt with an American flag and eagle emblem, sunglasses, a triangle-marked hat, jeans, Converse shoes, and a black backpack. Authorities said he appeared to be of college age and blended into the campus.
- Forensic evidence: Palm impressions and DNA traces may have been left as the suspect climbed down the roof. Shoe prints matched Converse trainers.
- New sightings: CNN obtained footage of a person resembling the suspect walking in a residential area near the campus before the attack.
- Witness accounts: A Utah Valley student said they had seen a man on the Losee Center roof on two occasions in the weeks leading up to the shooting and described the behaviour as “weird.” A professor reportedly called out to the man, who dismissed the concern.
- Recovered weapon: The Mauser rifle linked to the killing was recovered from woodland near the campus.
What Remains Unknown
Authorities have not identified the suspect, nor do they know where he is. Mason admitted officials “have no idea” whether the suspect remains in Utah or has crossed state lines. The motive also remains unclear.
Investigation and Response
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed investigators have received over 7,000 tips and conducted nearly 200 interviews. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to an arrest. Cox added that Utah will pursue the death penalty once the suspect is captured.
The killing of Charlie Kirk on campus has been described by state officials as a political assassination.
