A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the racially aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in Walsall, following an urgent weekend appeal by West Midlands Police.
The arrest was made early on Monday morning in the Perry Barr area, two days after the attack in Park Hall, Walsall.
Police said the suspect was detained following multiple public reports after officers issued CCTV images of a man they wanted to trace.
The woman, who is in her 20s, was attacked and racially abused at a nearby property by a man she did not know after being seen in distress in the street shortly after 7.15pm on Saturday.
The Sikh Federation (UK) previously confirmed the victim is a Punjabi Sikh woman, stating the attacker had used racist language, including offensive slurs, during what they called a “vicious and hate-fuelled assault.”
This incident marked the second racially aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in the West Midlands in two months, following a similar attack in Birmingham in September.
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer described the arrest as a “significant development” in the investigation.
“This is a significant development in our investigation, and I’d like to thank everyone who has come forward with information following our appeal last night,” he said.
“Our investigation will progress today, and, as always, our priority is the woman who was the subject of this attack. She has been updated this morning and will continue to receive full support from specially trained officers.”
Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing, with forensic examinations and interviews continuing throughout Monday.
Local MP Preet Kaur Gill described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and said the community remains “shocked by the targeting of Sikh women in hate-motivated sexual assaults.”
The Sikh Federation also renewed its call for stronger police action on hate crimes, saying that “racist and gendered attacks of this kind must never be normalised.”
West Midlands Police have not yet confirmed whether the suspect remains in custody or if charges have been authorised.
