Australian media have identified 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed as the civilian who tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the Bondi Beach terror attack, an intervention that prevented further casualties. Al Ahmed, a fruit shop owner from Sutherland and father of two, was reportedly shot twice during the struggle and is now in hospital.
Relatives told reporters that he had no experience handling firearms and was walking past the area when he decided to intervene. Witnesses said he confronted the attacker while the gunman attempted to reload, managing to seize the weapon despite being hit. Emergency responders then secured the weapon as police moved in.
Family members described al Ahmed as someone who acted without hesitation when he saw people in danger. His cousin said he simply reacted in the moment, without concern for his own safety. Police have acknowledged the role of early civilian intervention in limiting the scale of the attack.
The Bondi Beach shooting left 12 people dead and multiple others injured when two gunmen opened fire on crowds gathered for a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday evening. One attacker was killed at the scene, while the other was shot and detained. Investigators continue to work across the area after improvised explosive devices were also found and removed by specialist teams.
