Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer have been found dead in their Los Angeles home in what police are investigating as a double homicide. Paramedics were first called to the property on Chadbourne Avenue at 3:38pm on Sunday, and officers were summoned shortly afterwards when the couple were discovered with what appeared to be knife wounds.
Police later confirmed that the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were those of Reiner and Singer. A family spokesperson said they were “heartbroken” by the deaths and requested privacy during what they described as an “unbelievably difficult time”.
Aerial footage from the scene, including images referencing unconfirmed online speculation, circulated widely on Sunday evening. Police stressed that no suspect has been identified, no one has been interviewed as a suspect, and no one is in custody. LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said investigators are “working to speak to every family member” as they establish the sequence of events.
Hamilton confirmed that the bodies remain inside the residence while detectives await a warrant to re-enter and begin a full forensic examination. He said the home is being preserved exactly as officers first found it and that there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. The Los Angeles County Coroner will formally identify the victims.
Neighbours reported that Larry David and Billy Crystal, who starred in Reiner’s film When Harry Met Sally, visited the home separately and left visibly upset.
Reiner and Singer are listed as the property owners in public records. Reiner’s daughter Romy is reported to live across the street with her children.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the deaths as “a devastating loss for our city and our country”, paying tribute to Reiner’s influence on American film and his long-standing involvement in social advocacy.
