Following the explosions, a major fire broke out in the affected area, leading to a large-scale response from fire crews and ambulance services. Images from the scene show shattered windows, heavy structural damage and debris scattered across nearby streets, with thick plumes of smoke rising above the city.

Residents across Utrecht reported feeling the impact of the explosions. One witness said windows shook even in areas some distance from the city centre.

Two trauma helicopters were seen landing in Lepelenburg Park, while a police helicopter continues to circle above the scene. Officers at the location have warned that further explosions are possible, though no cause has yet been identified.

Police said it was too early to determine what triggered the explosions and urged members of the public to stay away from the area while investigations continue.
