A number of roads in central Leicester remain closed following a serious incident near a university campus, as police confirmed it was not a mass stabbing and urged the public to avoid speculation.
Leicestershire Police said the incident took place in Oxford Street on Tuesday evening. Officers established a cordon, closing Oxford Street, Infirmary Road and surrounding streets for scene preservation and investigative work.
In a message posted on social media, the force said online speculation was “unhelpful” and confirmed that more verified information would be released in due course.
De Montfort University said it was aware of a “very serious incident” on its campus and was working closely with police.
A university spokesperson said support was being offered to students and staff who witnessed events and expressed sympathy with those affected.
Road closures remain in place on Infirmary Road, Oxford Street, Infirmary Square, Carlton Street, York Road, Lower Brown Street, The Gateway and Gosling Street. Junctions at Aylestone Road and Newarke Street have also been shut, restricting access for vehicles and pedestrians.
Police have warned that the closures are expected to continue for several hours, causing disruption during peak travel times. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and allow extra time for journeys.
East Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene at 17:03 GMT on Tuesday following reports of a medical emergency.
A spokesperson said a paramedic in an ambulance car, three crewed ambulances and an air ambulance responder attended. One patient was transported to Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Access to the hospital has been affected by the cordon. Police said NHS staff have been allowed through roadblocks on presentation of identification.
Earlier unconfirmed reports had suggested the incident may have involved multiple stabbings. Police have since said this is not accurate and stressed that no details can yet be confirmed.
In a statement issued overnight, officers said scene preservation remained in place while enquiries continued.
Local resident Prince Sandhu told Leicestershire Live that large numbers of police were present but residents had little information about what had happened.
Police said further updates would be published on official websites and social media channels when available.
