Our journalism includes breaking news, original reporting, liveblogs, investigations, analysis, editorials, sport, entertainment and automated global alerts. These standards govern how BPI News produces accurate, fair and transparent journalism.
Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy is our first priority.
Before publication, BPI News takes reasonable steps to:
- Verify important facts using reliable sources
- Consult official documents, court records, public statements and first-hand evidence where available
- Seek additional confirmation for disputed or developing claims
- Attribute information to its original source
- Identify information that BPI News has not independently verified
- Present allegations as allegations unless established through an authoritative legal process
- Ensure headlines, images, captions and social-media descriptions accurately represent the article
Breaking information can change quickly. BPI News updates developing articles when credible new information becomes available.
Sources and Attribution
BPI News identifies its sources whenever it is safe, lawful and editorially appropriate.
We use anonymous sources only when they have credible access to important information and there is a legitimate reason to protect their identity. We assess the source’s access, motivation and reliability and seek supporting evidence wherever reasonably possible.
When reporting information first published by another organisation, BPI News identifies or links to the original source. Linking to another publisher does not mean that BPI News has independently confirmed every claim in that report.
Social Media and User-Generated Material
BPI News treats social-media posts, eyewitness footage and other user-generated material cautiously.
Before presenting this material as verified, we take reasonable steps to establish:
- Who originally published or recorded it
- Where and when it was created
- Whether it has been edited or taken out of context
- Whether other evidence supports what it appears to show
- Whether publication could create unnecessary harm
Unverified material is clearly attributed and described as unconfirmed.
Fairness and the Right to Respond
BPI News treats people and organisations fairly.
When an article contains serious criticism or allegations, we seek a response from the affected person or organisation where reasonably possible. We include relevant responses fairly when they are received in time.
Urgent publication may proceed before a response arrives when there is a legitimate public-interest reason. In that situation, the article identifies that comment was requested where appropriate. We may update the article when a relevant response is subsequently received.
Fairness does not require BPI News to give equal weight to information that is demonstrably false or unsupported by credible evidence.
Corrections
BPI News corrects confirmed material errors promptly and transparently.
A significant correction includes an explanatory note describing what was changed. Minor spelling, grammar, formatting or presentation errors may be corrected without a note when they do not alter the meaning of the article.
Developing stories and liveblogs display an updated time when significant new information is added.

News, Analysis and Opinion
BPI News clearly labels editorials, opinion articles and analysis so readers can distinguish them from straight news reporting.
Writers may reach their own conclusions in editorial and opinion articles. Those conclusions remain subject to our standards concerning accuracy, attribution and honestly presented evidence.
BPI News does not knowingly publish fabricated evidence, invented quotations or deliberately misleading information in any format.
Crime and Court Reporting
BPI News reports crime and court proceedings carefully and respects the legal presumption of innocence.
Our reporting distinguishes between:
- An allegation
- An arrest
- A criminal charge
- A trial
- A conviction or acquittal
- A sentence
We use terms such as “alleged,” “accused,” “charged” and “convicted” accurately. We follow applicable reporting restrictions and protect the identities of victims, children and other legally protected individuals.
Previous allegations or convictions are included only when they are relevant, accurate and legally reportable.
Children and Vulnerable People
BPI News takes additional care when reporting about children, victims, bereaved families and vulnerable people.
We consider the likely consequences before publishing a name, photograph, medical detail or other identifying information. Publication requires a legitimate editorial or public-interest reason and compliance with applicable law.
We avoid unnecessary intrusion, humiliation and distress.
Suicide, Abuse and Traumatic Events
Reporting involving suicide, self-harm, sexual offences, domestic abuse and traumatic events receives additional editorial care.
BPI News avoids unnecessary descriptions that could cause further harm, encourage imitation or identify a legally protected victim. We include a suitable content warning or support information where it adds meaningful protection for readers.
Privacy and the Public Interest
BPI News balances an individual’s reasonable expectation of privacy against the public interest in publishing important information.
Public-interest considerations include:
- Protecting public health or safety
- Exposing crime or serious wrongdoing
- Preventing the public from being misled
- Revealing a serious failure by a public body
- Protecting children or vulnerable people
- Contributing responsibly to a significant matter of public debate
Public curiosity alone does not establish a public-interest justification.
Images, Video and Audio
Media published by BPI News is owned, licensed, used with permission, embedded under the original platform’s terms or otherwise lawfully available for publication.
Captions accurately describe what the material shows and include a source or credit where required.
Archive, representative, illustrative and AI-generated images are labelled when readers might otherwise mistake them for authentic media from the event being reported.
BPI News uses graphic or distressing material only when there is a clear editorial justification. We provide a warning where necessary.
Liveblogs
BPI News liveblogs provide chronological coverage of developing events.
Each live update displays its publication time. Information obtained from another organisation is attributed to that source. Claims that BPI News has not independently confirmed remain clearly attributed.
As events develop, earlier information may be corrected or updated. Pinned updates and summaries accurately reflect the latest confirmed position available to BPI News.
BPI Global Alerts
BPI Global Alerts monitors selected official and named sources for important events.
The system may automatically publish an initial alert from structured information supplied by an official source before a full human editorial review. Every such article is clearly labelled Automatic BPI Global Alert and identifies the originating source.
An automatic alert represents what the named authority has reported. It is not presented as independent eyewitness reporting by BPI News.
BPI News may subsequently check, correct, expand or remove information as the official assessment changes or further evidence becomes available.
The Worldwide Updates monitor may also display reports from external publishers. These entries direct readers to the original source and are not presented as independently verified BPI News reporting.
Artificial Intelligence and Automation
BPI News uses automation to assist with monitoring, formatting, transcription, search descriptions, internal links and other production tasks.
Except for clearly labelled automatic alerts produced from named official data, BPI News reviews AI-assisted material before it becomes part of original reporting. A human editor remains responsible for the accuracy, fairness, legality and final publication of BPI News journalism.
BPI News does not knowingly use AI to invent sources, quotations, witnesses, documents or events.

Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors, political organisations and commercial partners.
Advertising does not guarantee favourable coverage or prevent legitimate critical reporting. Sponsored, paid or commercially supported material is clearly distinguished from independent journalism.
Writers and editors disclose significant personal, political or financial interests that could reasonably affect their reporting.
Discrimination and Identity
BPI News includes references to race, religion, nationality, immigration status, disability, sex, gender or sexual orientation only when genuinely relevant to the story.
We do not infer a person’s identity solely from their name, appearance or location.
BPI News does not promote hatred, harassment or discrimination. Reporting a controversial statement does not mean that BPI News endorses it.
