BPI News uses artificial intelligence and automated technology to support parts of its publishing, monitoring and production process. We use these tools to assist our journalists and editors, not to replace editorial responsibility.
Except for clearly labelled automatic alerts produced from named official data, AI-assisted material is reviewed by a human editor before it becomes part of original BPI News reporting. BPI News remains responsible for everything it publishes.
How We Use AI
BPI News may use AI-assisted tools to:
- Check spelling, grammar and readability
- Assist with research and organise information
- Suggest headlines and article summaries
- Prepare search descriptions and other SEO information
- Identify relevant internal links to previous BPI News coverage
- Transcribe audio and video
- Assist with translations
- Format articles and liveblog updates
- Prepare illustrative graphics
- Monitor official sources for developing events
The journalist or editor decides what is ultimately published.
Human Editorial Responsibility
AI is not treated as a journalist, author, eyewitness or independent source.
For original BPI News reporting, a human editor is responsible for:
- Checking important facts
- Confirming names, dates, locations and statistics
- Checking quotations against their original source
- Distinguishing confirmed facts from allegations and opinions
- Reviewing fairness, privacy, copyright and public-interest concerns
- Correcting errors when they are identified
- Approving the final publication
Automatic BPI Global Alerts
The BPI Global Alerts system monitors structured information published by named official sources. It may automatically create an initial article when qualifying alert information is detected.
These articles are clearly labelled Automatic BPI Global Alert. They identify the originating organisation and provide access to the original source wherever possible.
An initial automatic alert may appear before it has received a full human editorial review. It is a structured summary of information supplied by the named authority and is not presented as independent eyewitness reporting by BPI News.
The underlying information may change as the responsible authority updates its assessment. BPI News editors can subsequently:
- Check the alert against the original source
- Correct or clarify its wording
- Shorten or improve its headline
- Add verified reporting
- Add licensed photographs or video
- Connect it to relevant BPI News coverage
- Remove information that is outdated or incorrect
Readers making immediate safety decisions must follow instructions issued directly by the relevant emergency service, government or official authority.
Worldwide Updates Monitor
The Worldwide Updates monitor automatically displays developing reports from named external publishers and organisations.
These entries provide a short description and direct readers to the original publisher. They are not presented as independently verified BPI News journalism unless a separate article clearly states that BPI News has conducted its own reporting or verification.
BPI News does not endorse every claim contained in an automatically collected external report.
Liveblogs
BPI News journalists and editors prepare and publish normal liveblog entries. Automation delivers new entries to readers without requiring the page to be refreshed.
Liveblog information is attributed to its source when it originates from another organisation. Claims that have not been independently confirmed are described as claims or reports rather than established facts.
As a breaking story develops, BPI News updates or corrects information when better evidence becomes available.
Research and Sources
BPI News does not use an AI-generated answer as the sole source for a factual claim.
Important information is checked using appropriate sources, which may include:
- Official documents and statements
- Court and public records
- Direct interviews
- Original photographs and video
- Published research and datasets
- Reporting from identifiable news organisations
Links, quotations, statistics and citations suggested by AI are checked against their original sources before they are used in original BPI News reporting.
Translation and Transcription
BPI News may use AI to assist with translation or transcription. Because automated systems can misunderstand unclear audio, regional expressions, names and specialist terminology, material facts and important quotations are checked against the original recording or document.
Where an AI-assisted translation is central to a report and has not been produced by an official translator, BPI News may identify it as an AI-assisted translation.
Images, Video and Audio
BPI News does not present AI-generated or substantially AI-altered media as genuine documentary evidence of a real event.
Synthetic or illustrative material is labelled when a reasonable reader might otherwise believe it depicts an actual person, location or event.
Routine technical adjustments including resizing, cropping, file conversion, noise reduction and basic colour correction are not treated as synthetic media when they do not materially change what the original media shows.
Privacy and Confidential Information
BPI News does not knowingly submit confidential-source identities, protected documents or unnecessary sensitive personal information to public AI services.
We consider the privacy, security and legal rights of sources and members of the public when using external technology.
Sensitive Reporting
AI does not make BPI News’ final decisions about a person’s guilt, ethnicity, religion, political position, health or credibility.
Reporting concerning crime, conflict, elections, children, medical matters and vulnerable people receives human editorial consideration. Automated classifications are not treated as verified facts.
Corrections and Accountability
BPI News remains responsible when AI or automation contributes to a published error.
Material errors are corrected in accordance with our Corrections and Complaints Policy. We do not use automation as an excuse for inaccurate or misleading information.
