The International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to receive an explanation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its decision to not send its national team to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The event is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9 at venues in Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore.

On Monday, the ICC informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of the BCCI’s stance. In response, the PCB sent a formal letter to the ICC seeking clarity on the reasons behind this decision. A PCB spokesperson stated that they are awaiting a reply before determining their next steps.

The ICC faces a tight deadline, as it is required to announce the tournament schedule by November 20. However, the BCCI’s refusal complicates the situation, especially as the ICC relies heavily on the financial contribution of matches involving India and Pakistan. These games are central to generating revenue through broadcasting rights, gate receipts, and sponsorships.

Security concerns have often been cited as reasons for avoiding tours to Pakistan. However, the PCB pointed out that the ICC had been satisfied with Pakistan’s security arrangements during a review conducted on October 21. Additionally, major cricketing nations, including England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, have recently toured Pakistan without incident.

Sources within the ICC acknowledge the challenges this situation presents, noting that the BCCI’s position as a dominant financial contributor in global cricket makes it difficult to resolve the issue without India’s participation. Postponing the Champions Trophy remains a potential outcome if no agreement is reached by the ICC’s deadline.

Meanwhile, the ICC Champions Trophy trophy arrived in Pakistan and is set to tour several cities. Starting its journey from Islamabad, the trophy will visit Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, Murree, and Muzaffarabad before concluding its tour in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. This is the first time the trophy is touring a host nation prior to the tournament schedule being finalised.

The ICC was initially set to announce the tournament schedule on November 11 in Lahore. However, the BCCI’s refusal to participate delayed the announcement, further highlighting the complexities surrounding the event’s organisation.
