A former Bradford care worker has been jailed for sexually abusing a vulnerable woman in a care home.

Idris Sheikh, 46, of Carlisle Place, Bradford, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court after being unanimously convicted in August of engaging in sexual activity with a mentally disordered female.

He was jailed for 20 months and ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years.

Victim Too Vulnerable To Give Evidence

The court heard the woman had vulnerabilities so significant that she was unable to give evidence personally during the trial.

The prosecution relied on disclosures she made to care home staff and evidence gathered by police.

Jurors were told Sheikh had carried out three different forms of sexual touching.

His DNA was also discovered on the woman’s clothing.

Judge Says Evidence Was Clear

His Honour Judge Christopher Smith, who presided over the trial, said the jury had convicted Sheikh unanimously on what he described as clear evidence.

Sheikh did not give evidence during the trial and also declined an opportunity to give evidence during the sentencing hearing.

Judge Smith told him: “You did not have the courage to give evidence in this case.”

Sheikh continues to deny the offending.

‘Most Vulnerable Members Of Society’ Must Be Protected

Judge Smith said care workers occupy positions of significant trust and that courts must protect vulnerable people from those who abuse that responsibility.

He told Sheikh: “The most vulnerable members of society are entitled to the protection of the courts.”

The judge said families should be able to trust those responsible for looking after their loved ones.

He added that immediate imprisonment was the only appropriate punishment given the seriousness of the offence.

Will Not Work In Care Sector Again

The court heard Sheikh has since lost his job.

Judge Smith told him he would not work in the care home industry “ever again”.

Sheikh will also be subject to sex offender notification requirements for the next ten years.

Mitigation Heard By Court

In mitigation, the court was told Sheikh was not considered to pose a high risk of future offending and there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

He was also said to be the primary carer for his father, who has dementia, and to have caring responsibilities for his mother.

Judge Says Prison Must Send Message

Sentencing Sheikh to 20 months in prison, Judge Smith said he would serve a proportion of that sentence before becoming eligible for release.

The judge said even a relatively short period in custody should bring home the seriousness of the offending.

He said the sentence should also act as a warning to others who might abuse positions of trust involving vulnerable people.
