A Bradford man has been jailed after driving a BMW X5 into a police car while two officers were sitting inside.
Karam Tofeek, 24, of Leaventhorpe Lane, Bradford, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday after being found guilty of dangerous driving.
He was jailed for one year and nine months and disqualified from driving for three years and seven months.
Tofeek was also ordered to pay £187.
Police Stopped BMW Over Insurance Concerns
The incident happened on July 23 when officers spotted Tofeek driving a grey BMW X5 on Leeds Road in Bradley, Huddersfield.
Police suspected the vehicle was uninsured and instructed him to stop.
Tofeek initially pulled over.
However, officers repeatedly asked him to switch off the engine and he refused.
Police Car Rammed
The court heard Tofeek then drove into a police vehicle which had been parked in front of his BMW.
Two officers were still sitting inside the police car when it was struck.
The collision caused more than £6,000 worth of damage to the vehicle.
Neither officer was injured.
Officers intervened and detained Tofeek at the scene.
Convicted After Trial
Tofeek denied dangerous driving and the case proceeded to trial at Leeds Crown Court.
He was found guilty on September 16.
He returned to court this week for sentencing, where he received a custodial term of one year and nine months.
Officers Put In ‘Extremely Dangerous Situation’
Sergeant Andrew Johnson said the incident demonstrated the dangers faced by police officers while carrying out their duties.
“Two officers were put in an extremely dangerous situation when the defendant rammed their police vehicle,” he said.
“Thankfully, neither was seriously injured, but this incident highlights the very real risks our officers face every day.”
Police Welcome Sentence
Sgt Johnson said officers regularly encounter unpredictable and dangerous situations while protecting communities across West Yorkshire.
He said: “Our officers continue to show bravery and professionalism when dealing with dangerous and unpredictable situations while protecting the communities they serve.”
Police welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the seriousness of Tofeek’s behaviour.
Sgt Johnson added that roads policing officers would continue tackling criminality on West Yorkshire’s roads and working to protect other motorists and the wider public.
