A pathologist has detailed the dozens of injuries suffered by a Keighley father-of-two who died three days after being beaten in a brutal street attack.

Suhail Choudry, 35, suffered 52 separate injuries during the assault on Sefton Place in the early hours of February 8 this year.

Sheffield Crown Court heard he was attacked by a group of men wielding metal poles during what prosecutors have described as a “co-ordinated and pre-planned” assault.

Six men are standing trial.

Deeply Unconscious At Scene

Consultant forensic pathologist Dr Robert Ainsworth told jurors that Mr Choudry was treated by ambulance crews at the scene but was already “deeply unconscious”.

His blood pressure could not be recorded and both his pulse and heartbeat were slow.

The court heard injuries to his head also affected his ability to breathe.

He was stabilised before being taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Critically Low Blood Pressure

At hospital, Mr Choudry’s blood pressure was found to be critically low.

He remained deeply unconscious and his pupils were fixed.

Dr Ainsworth told the court this was consistent with a severe and developing brain injury.

Mr Choudry was transferred to the hospital’s neurosurgery department and underwent emergency surgery.

Major Brain Trauma

Doctors found he had suffered significant trauma to the brain as well as a large blood clot.

He also had extensive facial injuries and a broken left arm.

Further CT scans were carried out on February 8 and 9.

The court heard there was marked swelling to the brain, alongside damage caused by a lack of oxygen and blood supply.

Injuries Deemed Unsurvivable

Doctors attempted to reduce Mr Choudry’s sedation to assess whether there was any neurological function.

He remained deeply unconscious.

His injuries were later deemed “irreversible” and “unsurvivable”.

Active treatment was withdrawn on February 11.

Mr Choudry died the same day.

Post-Mortem Found 52 Injuries

A post-mortem examination was carried out on February 13.

Dr Ainsworth said Mr Choudry had suffered 52 separate injuries.

These included skull fractures, deep lacerations and what he described as “tramline” bruising.

The court previously heard tramline injuries can be consistent with someone being struck by a pole or similar weapon.

Injuries Consistent With Blunt Object

The tramline marks were found across Mr Choudry’s face and body.

Dr Ainsworth described them as two-track injuries caused by contact with a blunt, linear object.

Further injuries were found on his arms, fingers and hands.

His left arm had been fractured.

Pathologist Says Injuries May Have Been Defensive

Dr Ainsworth said the arm fracture had been caused by “not insignificant force”.

Prosecuting barrister John Harrison KC asked whether some of the injuries to Mr Choudry’s arms and hands were consistent with defensive wounds.

Dr Ainsworth replied: “Yes, certainly.”

He said bruising to the upper arm, extensive bruising on the back of the left forearm and the fracture itself may have been caused as Mr Choudry raised his arm to protect himself from a blow.

Six Men On Trial

The jury has previously heard that prosecutors allege the attack was “co-ordinated and pre-planned”.

Rashid Hussain, 41, of Redcliffe Street, Keighley, denies murder, violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Hakeem Gulzar, 28, of Plover Street, Keighley, denies the same three offences.

Faisal Khan, 26, of Malsis Road, Keighley, also denies murder, violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon.

Mohammed Aliyaan Khan, 23, of Malsis Road, Keighley, denies the same charges.

Majid Hussain, 42, of no fixed abode, Keighley, denies murder, violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon.

Waseem Khan, 40, of East Avenue, Keighley, denies murder.

The trial continues.
