Shipley Chicken Shop Listed As Permanently Closed After One-Star Food Hygiene Rating

A Shipley chicken shop is now listed as permanently closed after receiving a one-star food hygiene rating and being issued with a series of urgent requirements by Bradford Council inspectors.

Crispy Chicken, at 269 Leeds Road, was inspected by Bradford Council’s Environmental Health Food Safety Team on April 2.

The business received a one-star food hygiene rating following the inspection.

Google now lists the premises as “permanently closed”, although the inspection information provided does not state that the council ordered the business to shut or that its closure was directly caused by the hygiene rating.

Sanitiser And Cross-Contamination Concerns

Inspectors found the business did not have an adequate supply of sanitiser compliant with the required BS EN standards for cleaning and disinfection.

The shop was told to ensure enough suitable cleaning and disinfecting products were available to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Inspectors also recommended that ready-to-eat food should be stored above raw products.

The wash hand basin was required to be kept ready for use at all times.

Food Stored In Open Tins

The inspection found food being stored in open tins.

The business was advised to transfer food into suitable cleanable containers instead because continued storage in opened tins can present a contamination risk.

Inspectors also told the shop to stop leaving scoops and spoons inside food storage containers.

All high-risk food was required to be properly covered.

Extraction System Not Working

Several structural and maintenance problems were also recorded.

The extraction canopy above the Henny Penny cooking machine was not working at the time of the inspection.

The business had been relying on natural ventilation as a temporary measure and was instructed to repair the system as soon as possible.

Leaking Pipe And Damaged Flooring

Inspectors also identified a leaking drainpipe connected to the toilet wash hand basin.

A wash hand basin in the main kitchen was providing only hot water.

Floor covering beneath the pizza oven was deteriorating, while chipped tiles elsewhere were required to be sealed to create a smooth, impervious and easily cleanable surface.

Burnt Spatula And Fabric Chair Found

A burnt or melted spatula was found which inspectors said could no longer be properly maintained in a clean condition.

A fabric chair was also present in the food preparation area.

Inspectors said the chair could not be effectively cleaned or maintained to the standard required in a food preparation environment.

Food Safety System Not Available

The inspection also identified shortcomings in management controls.

Crispy Chicken did not have a documented food safety management system available on the premises.

Inspectors were told a new pack was on order following a move from a previous business.

The shop was instructed to introduce and implement documented food safety procedures, alongside diary records or monitoring checks appropriate to the activities being carried out.

Staff Training Required

The business was also reminded that all food handlers must receive food hygiene training appropriate to the work they perform.

Crispy Chicken is currently listed on Google as permanently closed.
