In a heartbreaking turn of events, Matija Sarkic, the talented goalkeeper for Millwall and the Montenegro national team, has passed away suddenly at the age of 26. Sarkic, who joined the Championship club from Wolves in August 2023, had made a significant impact with 33 appearances last season.

The Montenegro Football Association (FSCG) confirmed the tragic news on Saturday morning, stating that Sarkic had collapsed at his apartment in Budva. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.

In a statement, the FSCG described Sarkic as a “beloved member” of the national squad and remembered him as an “eternally smiling guy.” The association added, “His untimely death has caused great pain to the Sarkic family.”

Sarkic last represented Montenegro in a 2-0 friendly defeat by Belgium on 5 June. His passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with many mourning the loss of a promising talent.

Millwall Football Club expressed their devastation in a statement: “Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time. We are completely devastated by this tragic news.”

Sarkic’s career saw him rise through the ranks, beginning with his early days at Anderlecht before moving to Aston Villa’s youth setup. He spent time on loan at various clubs, including Wigan Athletic and Shrewsbury Town, before joining Wolves and eventually signing with Millwall.

As Millwall and the wider football family come to terms with this tragic loss, thoughts and prayers go out to Sarkic’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time.
