A Birmingham shopkeeper has been charged with three counts of sexual assault of a child after concerns were raised over a video circulating widely on social media.
Shazad Malik, 48, of Birmingham, was arrested on Friday following an investigation by West Midlands Police into allegations involving a child at his shop in Alum Rock.
The widely circulated footage is reported to show Malik sexually assaulting a child inside the shop.
Separate footage shared on social media shows Malik being confronted by members of the local Muslim community before his arrest.
West Midlands Police said its investigation followed concerns raised by members of the community in connection with the video circulating online.
The force subsequently charged Malik with three counts of sexual assault of a child.
Police thanked the community for coming forward and assisting officers with the investigation.
“We thank them for their assistance in this investigation and appreciate their on-going support,” West Midlands Police said.
Malik remained in police custody following his arrest and was due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 10 August.
The three charges against Malik are allegations and will be determined through the criminal justice process.
